What is letrozole 2.5mg pil?
Letrozole 2.5mg Tablets is a hormonal therapy drug. It is used to treat oestrogen receptor-positive (ER-positive) breast cancer.
It is usually used when you have been through menopause. Letrozole can also be given if you have hormonal therapy drugs to stop the ovaries working or have your ovaries removed.
Sometimes it might be used to treat breast breast cancer in men, transgender (trans) women and people assigned male at birth.
You may have letrozole:
- to reduce the risk of breast cancer coming back (adjuvant treatment) – this can be before or after treatment with tamoxifen
- before surgery to try to reduce the size of the cancer
- as a first treatment if surgery is not suitable for you or needs to be delayed
- to control breast cancer that has come back or has spread to other parts of the body (secondary breast cancer).
It is best to read this information with our general information about hormonal therapies and the type of cancer you have.
Your cancer team will talk to you about this treatment and its possible side effects before you agree (consent) to have treatment. They will explain why you are having letrozole and how long you will take it for.
How Letrozole 2.5mg Tablets Works?
Letrozole 2.5mg for fertility is a type of medicine known as an aromatase inhibitor. It works by significantly reducing the amount of oestrogen (estrogen) produced in the body.
Hormones are natural chemical messengers that control many functions in the body. In some breast cancers, known as oestrogen receptor-positive (ER-positive) breast cancers, oestrogen binds to receptors on cancer cells and encourages them to grow and multiply.
After menopause, the ovaries stop producing oestrogen. However, the body continues to make small amounts of oestrogen in other tissues (mainly fat) through an enzyme called aromatase. This enzyme converts androgens (male hormones) into oestrogen.
Letrozole 2.5 mg for ovulation induction blocks the aromatase enzyme, preventing it from converting androgens into oestrogen. As a result, oestrogen levels in the body drop dramatically — often by more than 95–99%. With much less oestrogen available, ER-positive breast cancer cells are deprived of the signal they need to grow, which can slow down or stop the cancer’s progression.
This mechanism makes letrozole particularly effective as a hormone therapy for postmenopausal women with hormone-sensitive breast cancer.
Key Points (for quick understanding):
- Target: Aromatase enzyme
- Effect: Strongly lowers oestrogen levels
- When it works best: In postmenopausal women with ER-positive breast cancer
- Outcome: Reduces the fuel (oestrogen) that helps certain breast cancers grow
