What is Clomiphene 50mg (Clomid)?

Clomiphene or Clomiphene citrate 50mg is a tablet use to stimulate your ovaries to produce eggs, a process called ovulation induction.

Why do you need this?

Clomiphene 50mg for men and Clomiphene 50mg for women, You will need this if your ovaries are not producing eggs on their own, that is, you are not ovulating naturally.

What is the dosage of this drug and when do you take it?

This tablet is usually started at a dose of 50 mg once a day. It is taken for a total of 5 consecutive days, during your menstrual cycle and preferably at the same time every day.

The first day of your period is counted as day one of your cycle.

You start taking the tablet on day 2 of your cycle and take the last dose on day 6.

You will then have a follow-up scan and a blood test to check if the treatment has been successful in stimulating your ovaries. The scan will be done between day 8 to day 12 of your cycle.

You will also be asked to have a blood test, usually on day 21 of your cycle, either at the hospital or at your doctors’ surgery.

If the initial starting dose of 50 mg has not succeeded in stimulating your ovaries, the dose will be increased for a subsequent treatment cycle.

How successful is it Clomid Clomiphene citrate 50mg Tablets?

Ovulation rates of 70% and pregnancy rates of close to 40% have been reported with clomid Clomiphene 50mg.

Side effects

Like any other medication, this drug also has some side effects. These range from headache, nausea, abdominal pain, hot flushes, bloating, breast tenderness, weight gain and visual disturbances like blurring of vision, double vision or seeing flashing lights. Most side effects are minor but, if you experience any visual disturbance, please stop taking the drug.

It can occasionally cause a lot of eggs to develop at the same time causing your ovaries to become enlarged. This may result in retention of fluid in your abdomen leading to pain and a swollen abdomen. This condition is called ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). In some women it can be severe enough to require hospitalization with drainage of the accumulated fluid. The increased number of eggs produced also increases the risk of multiple pregnancy (5- 10%).

There is no evidence of increased miscarriage or birth defects with clomiphene.

How long can you use Clomiphene 50mg Tablets?

It is used for a maximum of 6 treatment cycles due to a small increase in risk of ovarian cancer following use for more than 12 cycles.

Directions	Keep out of the reach and sight of children. Store in original container below 25ºC. Do not use Clomid after the expiry date which is stated on the carton. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month. Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. These measures will help to protect the environment.
Warning	Like all medicines, Clomid can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Stop taking Clomid and see your doctor or go to a hospital straight away. If,You have an allergic reaction. The signs may include: a rash, swallowing or breathing problems, swelling of your lips, face, throat or tongue •You have numbness, weakness or paralysis on one side of your body, slurred speech, sudden blurred vision, confusion or unsteadiness. These could be signs of a stroke Stop taking Clomid and see a doctor straight away if you notice any of the following serious side effects – you may need urgent medical treatment: •Over-stimulation of the ovary. This can lead to pain in the pelvis, stomach or calf, swelling or feeling bloated, passing less urine, difficulty in breathing or an increase in weight. If this happens, your doctor may lower your dose of Clomid •Blurring of vision or spots or flashes in front of the eyes . These symptoms usually get better but in some cases they may be permanent. Your doctor may send you for an eye examination. •Liver problems that may cause the eyes or skin to go yellow (jaundice) •Sudden and severe headaches •Mental illness such as ‘psychosis’ Tell your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following side effects get serious or lasts longer than a few days: •Increased pain with periods, heavy periods or bleeding between periods •Pain in the lower part of the stomach. This could be a sign of endometriosis or worsening of endometriosis, ovarian cancer or enlarged ovaries •Cloudy lenses in the eye (cataracts) •Fits, feeling faint, dis-orientated or more tense than normal. Also, balance problems or feeling dizzy (vertigo) •Feeling tired or difficulty in sleeping (insomnia), depression or change in moods or behaviour •Speech problems •Skin rash or itching •Feeling or being sick •Flushing of the skin •Headaches •Swelling of the face, around the eyes, lips or tongue •Painful breasts •Hair loss or thinning
